A MAN who used stolen credit cards to buy cigarettes, sunglasses, food and other items has been jailed after appearing in court on a string of property theft charges.

Samuel Leslie Rawson, 25, formerly of Lowes Mount Road in Oberon, appeared in custody before magistrate Michael Allen in Bathurst Local Court on June 29, charged with seven offences.
The charges against Rawson included four counts of dishonestly obtain property by deception, goods in custody suspected of being stolen, drive a motor vehicle during a period of disqualification and dishonestly obtain property by deception.
The court heard that between 11.30pm on February 18, 2015 and 6am on February 19 there was a break and enter at a house in Wattle Close, Kelso, where a wallet containing cash and credit cards was stolen. It was alleged Rawson then used these cards at the BP Service Station in Kelso, the Coles Express and other retailers in Bathurst to purchase items, including a pair of sunglasses, Weetbix, cigarettes, fuel and milk.
The court was told the purchases were captured on the respective CCTVs, including the BP Service Station in Stewart Street, where Rawson used one of the credit cards to purchase cigarettes via a pay pass system.
The manager of the service station called police, who captured Rawson’s vehicle and registration information on the shop’s CCTV.
A short time later police pulled over Rawson, who was sitting in the back seat of the car identified on the CCTV, and noticed he was wearing the same cap he was wearing when some of the items were purchased using the stolen credit cards.
When arrested Rawson declined legal advice and made admissions to using the stolen cards but denied any involvement in the break and enter at Wattle Close.
At the time of his arrest, Rawson was also in possession of sunglasses purchased using the stolen cards, at the BP Service Station in Kelso. Rawson admitted to purchasing the sunglasses at the service station.
On the four charges of obtain property by deception Mr Allen convicted Rawson and jailed him for three months. He will be eligible for parole on September 26, 2015.
Rawson was jailed for three months on the goods in custody charge and on the dishonestly obtain property by deception charge.
For driving a motor vehicle during a period of disqualification, Rawson was disqualified from driving for two years and jailed for three months.
