10PM UPDATE: Chifley police have posted this message on their Facebook page: "Thanks to all those people keeping a look out for our escapee. I am very pleased to advise that we have recaptured the youth and he is now safely tucked away in our cells. As a bonus we also managed to recover the handcuffs which the youth had not been able to remove."

EARLIER: A HANDCUFFED 16-year-old has escaped police custody in Bathurst today.
Bathurst police are seeking the help of the community to find the youth who escaped from the Bathurst Children's Court.
Officers have confirmed the youth was wearing handcuffs at the time of his escape.
He is described as being an Aboriginal male, 165cm tall, thin build, weighing 45-50kg.
He has long, black curly hair with a long plait down left hand side.
He was last seen wearing a black zip-up hooded jumper and light grey track pants.
"He was last seen in the vicinity of the Stockland shopping centre in William Street, Bathurst about 1.30pm today," a police spokesperson said.
"Although the person is not considered dangerous, police advise that you should not attempt to approach this person.
"If anyone sees this person or knows of his whereabouts they are urged to contact Bathurst police on 6332 8699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."
