The teenagers were walking down Russell Street near the Bathurst Regional Council chambers when they were hit from behind in what police are calling a “coward punch” attack.
One boy sustained a punch to the back of the head, causing discomfort, while the other was hit on the side of the face, causing swelling and a black eye. Both teenagers were treated at Bathurst Base Hospital and were later given the all clear.
But police are hoping that someone in the community may be able to shed some light on the culprits; the first offender is described as having fair hair, shaved sides with a pattern, who at the time of the assault was wearing a red jumper, possibly with a back pack.
The second offender was wearing a flat cap, a black hoodie and, possibly, jeans.
Inspector Andrew Spliet, duty officer with Chifley Local Area Command, said police were treating the incident as a serious assault and the reality was people could die from coward punches.
“It’s a very serious issue,” he said.
“We’ve seen it happen in Sydney and other regional areas.
“All it takes is for the person to fall the wrong way, hit their head and fracture their skull and they can die as a result.”
He said, depending on the injury sustained, anyone who lands a coward’s punch could expect to be charged with offences ranging from assault to murder.
He said what was particularly disturbing about the case was the fact it was totally unprovoked.
Insp. Spliet said police were hoping someone may have witnessed the incident and would be able to assist police. Anyone with information is asked to contact Bathurst Police on 63328699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
