Alan Simmons, 18, of Alamein Walk at West Bathurst, appeared in Bathurst Local Court yesterday to face 10 charges in relation to the attack on lower Russell Street.
Magistrate Michael Allen ordered Simmons be remanded in custody for a bail hearing later this month.
Police allege Simmons grabbed a 22-year-old woman as she walked along Russell Street at 5.50pm on Saturday.
He is accused of dragging his victim into a vacant paddock before punching her in the face numerous times and repeatedly sexually assaulting her for up to one-and-a-half hours.
It is alleged that when Simmons left the scene, the woman ran to a nearby home where police and ambulance paramedics were contacted.
She was taken to Bathurst hospital where she was treated for multiple injuries as well as facial cuts, bruising and swelling.
Simmons faced 10 charges including kidnapping in circumstances of aggravation, six counts of aggravated sexual assault inflicting actual bodily harm and three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
Aboriginal Legal Aid solicitor Jack Hibbard, representing Simmons, applied for a non-publication order on the case.
Magistrate Allen considered arguments from Mr Hibbard and police prosecutor Sergeant Darren Pearce during his determination of the application.
He said it was “paramount” the case was seen as “open and transparent” by the community.
Magistrate Allen also added that the crime was one of “gratuitous violence and serious sexual assault on an unsuspecting female victim”.
Chifley local area command detectives and State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad have commenced an investigation, launching Strike Force Laven.
They have called for anyone who may have information and has not yet spoken to police to come forward or call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Simmons will next front Bathurst Local Court for a bail hearing on Monday, August 17.
