AN inmate who escaped from Kirkconnell Correctional Centre just one day after the facility was re-opened remains at large.
In a situation that has left NSW Corrective Services red-faced, police are yet to locate 23-year-old man, who waited until lockdown before escaping by forcing a window on Friday night.
Just 24 hours earlier, Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin praised the extensive improvements to the prison’s security and communications, which were undertaken in the multi-million dollar overhaul of the centre.
Emails yesterday to the department of Corrective Services, which included questions about a security review and specific details about the inmate’s escape, went unanswered.
Jobs were lost when the minimum security jail was controversially closed in 2011 as part of a state-wide restructure.
But on Thursday, the day before the man's escape, it was recommissioned by State Minister for Corrective Services David Elliott.
Yesterday police attached to Chifley LAC confirmed the escaped inmate was yet to be arrested. Police believe the prisoner may have already left the Chifley local command area.
Police have urged anyone who may know of his whereabouts not to approach the prisoner but to contact triple-0 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
