WITH two rounds remaining in Woodbridge Cup, the top five sides are four points clear of sixth-placed Eugowra, who must win their remaining two games against Canowindra at home and Peak Hill away to be any chance of making the finals.
Binalong will be minor premiers, but which teams finish in positions two to five won’t be decided until the last round.
All sides are still in contention to make the Woodbridge Cup grand final on September 20, when the game will be broadcast live on ABC radio Grandstand by commentators Andrew Moore and Matt Elliot, right across the listening area and throughout the state.
Last Sunday, Canowindra Tigers (fourth) hosted Peak Hill Roosters (second) in a game that did not reach any great heights, although we saw 13 tries scored.
Canowindra started well and, on the end of several penalties, scored four good team tries to Nick Wilson, Jake Davis, Jayden Brown and Mick Mason. Matt McLean kicked three conversions for the Tigers to lead 22-0 after 25 minutes.
Things then changed around and the Roosters, led by Jason Boney, showed their attacking flair, scoring three tries in 10 minutes to Caleb Cohen, Cameron Nolan and Carl Ralph. Boney nailed three conversions to close the gap to 22-18.
From the restart Peak Hill scored through Brady Morris to make it 22-all after 43 minutes.
The Tigers hit back in the 50th minute when Brown scored his second try and McLean converted for a 28-22 with 30 minutes to go.
Play then fell away for the next 15 minutes, both sides guilty of too many mistakes.
The Tigers set up the win with a three-try rampage in 10 minutes from big centre Jake Davis, who scored four for the game. McLean kicked two conversions to take the lead out to 44-22 with five minutes left.
Peak Hill scored a late consolation try to Tom Ryan which Nathan Hando converted, but the Tigers still won 44-28.
Both sides’ attack was good but they will have to improve their defence to have any chance in the final series.
Jake Davis, four tries in the centres, was strong throughout, causing the Roosters trouble all game. He was well supported by Anthony Redfern, until he came off injured, and Jayden Brown.
Roosters halves Jason Boney and Nathan Hando played well as did back rower Cameron Nolan.
Binalong Brahmans continued on their winning way with a 40-6 victory over Eugowra.
Trundle Boomers’ charge keeps going after they defeated Gooloogong 38-10, and Grenfell Goannas won the local derby 68-18 over Burrangong Bears. Cargo won on a late forfeit from Condobolin.
In youth league, Binalong won 26-18 over Eugowra in a top class game. Peak Hill won 54-10 over Canowindra.
In league tag, Binalong leap-frogged Eugowra into first place in a tight 8-6 win. Grenfell defeated Burrangong 62-6, while Condobolin scraped home 18-10 over Cargo.
