THERE is no cause for concern in the Western NSW Mariners FC women’s State League camp according to goalkeeper Jess Daymond despite dropping back to back games on the weekend.
In a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday to catch up from a washed-out match earlier in the season, the Mariners went down 2-1 to Bankstown City SC in Sydney.
The next day, the Mariners hosted Gladesville in Wallerawang and this time were bested 2-0.
In context the results mean little for the Western team, who are a point clear of Bankstown on top of the ladder and have a game in hand going into the final weekend of the regular season.
They will take on Southern Branch in two games.
With Southern having won only twice all season, Western would fancy themselves to pick up at least one win to lock up a minor premiership.
“There’s definitely no major worries there from our point of view,” Daymond said.
“We were missing Kristy Collingridge and Teegan Courtney on the weekend and they will have a big impact when they return. We didn’t actually feel like we played that poorly on Sunday.”
Daymond herself was absent from the loss to Bankstown, which gave the Sydney side two wins from three matches against the competition leaders this season.
The two sides were locked at 1-all at half-time before Bankstown scored the decisive goal midway through the second half.
On Sunday Gladesville led from the early stages after the Mariners conceded an own-goal. The visitors made sure of the win with a second just a few minutes from full-time.
“They came to play, there was no doubt about it. They went into the match in a battle for fourth spot and knew they had to win, and they played like it,” Daymond said of Gladesville.
“We played well ourselves in patches, but with players missing we struggled to put it together for long enough.
“The conditions were very ordinary with all the rain around, once it gets wet out there it turns into a cow paddock basically.
“We picked things up in the second half and played some very good football at times, but didn’t create a lot of clear chances and they were good enough to get the win.
“It would be good to finish on a positive note this weekend, we feel as though we deserve to finish on top of the competition after playing as well as we have for most of the year.”
