The Seymour Centre celebrated its 35th year with clients, staff and volunteers encouraged to relive the 1950s. Hit movie Grease was the theme with women dressed up as the Pink Ladies and men as the T-Birds.
The day was full of celebration with rock n’ roll dancing, best dressed competitions and food straight out of a 1950s diner.
Clients and staff enjoyed a luncheon of hot dogs, sliders and chips followed by a banana split for dessert.
Centre manager Terisa Ashworth said around 100 clients take part in activities each week which provide a vital social outlet for the aged as well as those with a disability and their carers.
“It’s a fun place for people to come in a safe environment and spend time with others,” she said.
Marie Anderson and Dawn Stammers were at the party yesterday and have been clients of the centre for eight and three years respectively.
“I’ve made friends here and I enjoy coming,” Mrs Anderson said. “You make friends and it’s a break rather than stay at home.”
In the year’s since Mrs Stammers’ husband died, she has found the Seymour Centre a great benefit.
“I suffer from depression and I come for companionship,” she said. “The staff and volunteers are great and nothing is too much trouble.”
Best dressed male was awarded to Chris Goodlet and best dressed female to Elaine Wood.
The Seymour Centre is located at Unit 3, 55 Seymour Street and is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am-5pm.
