The markets, which are organised by the Macquarie Lions Club, were in need of “some big changes”, according to club president Graham Carter.
Running this Saturday at Berry Park, the markets will be known as the Riverside Markets and will offer Bathurstians a wider range of stalls.
“We’re looking to expand their size and appeal by getting away from the ‘flea’ idea,” Mr Carter said. “The club would like to attract patrons who are looking for all sorts of bargains as well as quality gifts.”
Mr Carter said they plan to attract stallholders to sell items including clothing, jewellery, plants, books, bric-a-brac, wooden toys or antiques.
The Riverside Markets will also play host to the region’s producers and Mr Carter hopes those who make conserves, preserves, cakes, slices, fruit and vegetables will take part.
Mr Carter said the new markets would appeal to all members of the community and would also host face painting and children’s stalls.
“We are also planning to have more music, performers and displays and are planning a theme for each market,” he said.
The club has a Father’s Day focus for its first re-branded market this Saturday.
“The first Riverside Markets will feature a buskers morning, with gift vouchers on offer for those who turn up, and of course an emphasis on Father’s Day on the Sunday,” Mr Carter said.
“In October the theme will be baby wear and associated things, November will have an emergency services focus and December will be the pre-Christmas market.”
He encourages stallholders to come along to the re-branded markets, and each new stall will be free for the first market this Saturday.
Mr Carter also welcomed other service clubs or organisations to host a stall to raise public awareness or bolster their fundraising.
As a Lions project, all funds raised through stall fees and the market barbecue will be used to help those in need.
