This is Dr Miller’s eighth year at All Saints’ and he yesterday said he would miss it very much.
Staff and parents at the school were told of Dr Miller’s move yesterday.
Dr Miller said All Saints’ had a wonderful, supportive and strong school community in a town that takes education very seriously.
“We have a wonderful staff here that is very committed to students and their learning. I have really appreciated that,” he said.
Dr Miller said for him the highlight of his time at All Saints’ was seeing the school regain some confidence and maintain its place in Bathurst.
He said he had also enjoyed the developments in education through technology, and was grateful for Building the Education Revolution funding which allowed the school to build a library and the programs that has facilitated.
Dr Miller said his new school had an outstanding reputation.
It is more than double the size of All Saints’ College, with 1300 students including boarders and day students. It was established in 1861 and, like All Saints’, has a long history of connection with the community.
“These are the kinds of schools I like,” Dr Miller said.
All Saints’ College Council chairman Anglican Bishop of Bathurst Ian Palmer said he received the news of Dr Miller’s departure with a sense of pride as well as a feeling of sadness.
“Peter has given outstanding service to the school for nearly eight years and advanced the life of our college in many areas, including academic, sport, equestrian, music, debating and drama,” he said.
Bishop Palmer said one of the key things Dr Miller had brought to All Saints’ College was financial stability.
He added that Dr Miller had also encouraged a strong sense of community at the school.
Bishop Palmer said Geelong College was a large school in the Uniting Church tradition.
“Geelong College conducted an extensive search for their principal and Peter was selected from a strong field of national and international candidates,” Bishop Palmer said.
He added that the college council would meet later this month to begin the process of appointing a new head of college.
Bishop Palmer said the Anglican Church’s financial position would not affect the process of appointing a new head of college in any way.
Dr Miller will take up his new position at the start of Term 1 in 2016.
