RUSSELL Street is set to shine next month when the Bathurst Bicentenary Gala Ball takes place under a giant marquee.

Replacing the annual V8 Ball, this year’s sold-out event will showcase an extensive range of local food, wine, beer and even gin.

The 550 tickets to the ball, to be held on Friday, October 9, were snapped up quickly, according to Bathurst Regional Council mayor Gary Rush.

“All our expectations were it’ll be a sell-out ... it’s one of the signature bicentenary events,” he said.

Russell Street, between William and George streets, will be a no-go-zone during the event as gala ball guests mingle with V8 Supercar drivers.

Musicians from the Mitchell Conservatorium will perform as guests enter the expansive marquee to begin their celebration under the stars.

Stone Pine Distillery is just one of the local producers taking part and guests will be welcomed with a gimlet aperitif, a traditional gin and lime juice cocktail, to kick off the evening.

Cr Rush said this year’s bicentenary celebrations have focused on the city’s past and present, and will now look towards the future.

He said many of Bathurst’s young performers who are taking part in the gala ball are great examples of the city’s hopes for the future.

Among the other performers to entertain guests will be Cirkus Surreal and the Oz Scot dancers.

“We’re very proud of the achievements of these young people and this highlights the talents we have right here in Bathurst,” Cr Rush said.

“They are a significant part of our future.”

Attendees on the night will also get a sneak-peak of the third and final Illuminate Bathurst light show for the year before its official opening the following night.

The first digital light show held in May this year featured glimpses of the city’s history.

The second show, held in July, included projections of the city as it is today.

The upcoming light show will highlight Bathurst’s future possibilities, mixed with a distinct motorsport theme to coincide with Race Week festivities.
