A toiler on and off the field, Piper was on Saturday night recognised for his efforts with the CYMS Old Boys Recognition Award - affectionately known as the COBRA - at the green and golds’ presentation night at the Orange City Bowling Club.
Piper joined last year’s winner Kiel Vardanega and fellow winners Des Knight (2013), Anton Logan (2012) and inaugural recipient Pat Gibson (2011) as CYMS players honoured with the gong.
“Always nice to be recognised for the work you do around the club and its a massive honour to be named COBRA,” Piper said, also a back-to-back premiership winner with the CYMS first division side.
All in the club’s 70th anniversary year as well.
“Winning a comp last year was great but to win it this year with my brother [Scott} and to get two grades on the wall [at Kelly’s] in our 70th year will go down in history. It’s great to be green,” Piper added.
Capping a phenomenal year for CYMS, Simon Osborne was another big winner.
The prop won premier league best and fairest, while also sharing the club’s most valuable player award alongside lock Tim Mortimer.
Other best and fairest winners were Luke Kilkeary (under 18), Elise Garlick (league tag) and Aaron Willis, Tom Stonestreet and Wayne Collett, all three sharing the top first division award.
Jess McLean won the rookie of the year, while Tim Bassmann claimed the most consistent player in all grades award, under 18 prop Dave Stelling won the CYMS junior club person and Anton Logan won the 2015 clubman of the year.
Trish Harvey won the Des Morrissey award and Kiel Vardanega won The Desi, named in honour of club captain Des Knight, which recognises someone’s passion for the club.
CYMS will be holding their 70th year Christmas party on Saturday, November 21 from 2pm at the Western.
