TWELVE months after dominating the Bathurst rounds of the Australian Supercross Championship, two-time defending series champion Matt Moss is raring to make it three straight crowns when the 2015 series gets underway next weekend.
The series returns to the Bathurst Showground next Saturday, held in conjunction with the Bathurst 1000 and at a time that allows fans of both sports to attend each event.
Moss was in sublime form last year, winning both the Friday and Saturday finals as two rounds of the competition were staged at the same Bathurst venue.
He ultimately went on to take out every round of the 2014 championship.
“It was a great event last year, and I’d expect it to be bigger again this time around,” Moss said.
“The track was very long, very demanding with a long set of whoops but ultimately it was great and a lot of fun to ride on.
“The Saturday in particular last year was unbelievable in terms of the atmosphere with people coming down from the mountain, the crowd was crazy.
“The layout will be totally different again this time I’d expect, there will be harder jumps and tougher technical sections.”
This year only one round will be contested in Bathurst with five more to follow, culminating in the final event at Knights Stadium in Melbourne in early December.
Moss is back in the saddle of his Motul Pirelli Suzuki RM-Z450 race bike and has his sights set on claiming an historic third straight title when the 2015 competition roars into life at the Showground.
The 27-year-old has been sidelined from racing since July 19 when he was injured in an accident during a round of the 2015 MX Nationals championship in Victoria.
Scaphoid and knee injuries were among the wounds he suffered, but almost eight weeks later Moss gained the clearance to start riding again earlier this week. He has taken to the training tracks with the throttle pinned.
“It feels so good to be back on the bike, awesome,” enthused Moss, who has ridden both motocross and supercross tracks to help him return to full fitness.
“I’m feeling really good and have been keeping myself healthy during the time off the bike, so now that I’m riding again, I’m back to 100 per cent straight away.
“I’ve already been pounding out the 20 lappers to get ready for supercross.
“I’m ready to go, I haven’t had any races, but the amount of preparation I’ve done has me pretty confident.”
After capturing the SX1 title in 2013, Moss enjoyed a sensational run through last year’s championship, stamping his absolute domination over the Supercross paddock.
“It was just one of those years when everything seemed to click into place,” he said of his 2014 campaign.
“I felt good going into the championship and knew I had done all my training and my program was solid, so it was great to go through undefeated and get my name in the record books.
“I would love to do that again: when you achieve something once, you want to go and do it again.”
There will be $120,000 in prize money up for grabs in the coming series and the presence of a handful of international stars will only add to its appeal.
American Gavin Faith and Venezuelan Anthony Rodriguez will both compete across the six rounds, while the biggest name in the sport – Chad Reed – will compete at round rive in Sydney.
He will be joined by American James ‘Bubba’ Stewart.
