After a lengthy legal battle, the NSW government has finally agreed with her, and will pay her more than $4 million in damages for malicious prosecution.

Ms Beckett was released from jail in 2001 after she served 10 years of a 12-year sentence, having been wrongfully jailed on a charge of soliciting to murder her husband Barry Catt​.

Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison, found that Taree police officer Detective Peter Thomas went on a "vengeful crusade" against Ms Beckett, after she filed complaints against him in the 1980s.

Justice Harrison awarded her damages totalling $4,091,717, including interest, but the government indicated it would apply for a stay pending an appeal.

However, NSW Attorney-General Gabrielle Upton said on Monday the state would pay Ms Beckett.

"After 26 years this saga must end," Ms Upton said in a statement.

"This is the right thing to do. Her case is extraordinary and requires a sensitive response after so long including 10 years of imprisonment.

"Roseanne Beckett has been through enough and should not have to fight the government any more. She deserves the right to move on."

On August 24, 1989, police arrested Ms Beckett and she was found guilty of soliciting two men to kill her husband, and of poisoning him with lithium.

In August 2005, the Court of Criminal Appeal quashed those convictions and ordered a retrial, but the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) did not pursue the case.

Ms Beckett's fight went to the High Court, which overturned a 1924 precedent requiring litigants in malicious prosecution cases to prove their innocence.

Detective Thomas died during the legal proceedings.

After Ms Beckett found out the total amount of damages she was entitled to earlier this month, she told reporters: "Enough is enough. It has been a battle of strengths, of the mights. I'm only little, but I've got a lot of fight."
