OH, can anyone stop him?
The Steve Turnbull-trained Oh I Am The One never looked in doubt on his way to taking out the Billy Soo Memorial Blayney Cup (2,400 metres) in a track record mile rate of 2:00.8 on Sunday.
Driven by Amanda Turnbull, favourite Oh I Am The One ($1.20) went clear from the death seat to see off stable mate Midnight Prowler ($32.20) by 6.4m with another metre back to Spanish Lustre ($21.70) in third.
The Canola Cup winner’s success on Sunday made it five wins from six Australian starts.
“I was confident going into his race at Bathurst, but he got rolled there, so you can never be too confident. He did a great job here,” Steve Turnbull, who had the drive on Midnight Prowler, said of Oh I Am The One.
“I was happy to get second with my fella. He’s been coming along good as well. Off the second row you need that bit of luck, but he did get it and he used it.”
As expected Kapow Shannon was quick off the mark to jump across to the lead from gate four.
On his inside Oh I Am The One found his way to the death seat and the final part of the quick-starting trio, Tulhurst Sarsha, took the sit behind the leader.
The field did two full laps of the Blayney track before the moves came on the bell lap.
Midnight Prowler made a move three wide from the back as the one out-one back runner Truly Miss Terious dropped out of the contest.
By that stage, however, Oh I Am The One had started to go clear of Kapow Shannon on his inside as the turn for home approached.
It was then a battle for the minor placings as Oh I Am The One sprinted away.
Turnbull said city racing awaits for the Gotta Go Cullen out of Angel Hannover four-year-old gelding, but only once he works his way further up in grade.
“We’re just using his strength at the moment. As he goes through the grades we might start to drive him a bit quieter. He is a reasonably relaxed horse, so I can’t see why we wouldn’t be able to drive him with a sit. He goes good with that in work with my Menangle horses,” he said.
The cup win was the icing on the cake in what was a memorable day for the Turnbull stable.
Earlier in the Menangle Where Horses Fly Country Series Heat (1,640m) Happy To Go ($1.20) blitzed the field in yet another track record of 1:57.1 over the mile.
Amanda Turnbull took the mare to her fourth career win since arriving in Australia during winter.
Happy To Go defeated the Wendy Turnbull duo of Old Jack Cambo ($9.10) and Miles Above ($106.80) by 14.9m and 19.1m respectively.
Lap Dancer ensured Steve and Amanda Turnbull saw a lock-out of the Menangle Country Series Heats with success in the meeting’s final event.
