The Family Violence Awareness Group hosted an information stall in the Bathurst City Centre where they encouraged men to take a pledge to say no to domestic violence. 

The vision of White Ribbon Day is for women to live in safety and free from all forms of men’s violence. It is also a means for men to speak out and act to stop violence against women, and also to challenge the attitudes and behaviours of men who use or condone violence.

Statistically in Australia, one woman is killed every week as a result of intimate partner violence. And, domestic and family violence is the principle cause of homelessness for women and children.

Amanda Adams, one of the women assisting at yesterday’s stall,  said it was well supported by the community.

In addition to providing information, the stall also sold white ribbons as a fundraiser for White Ribbon Australia, which aims to stop violence against women.

“It’s been quite busy, and we’ve had a lot of donations, with many people saying donate the change [as well],” she said.

Among those visiting the stall to make a donation were victims of domestic violence.

Following on from White Ribbon Day are the 16 Days of Activism Against Violence Against Women which carries through until December, 10, International Human Rights Day.

During this period, the Bathurst Family Violence Awareness Group will also display its One-in-Three Campaign ‘Ladies on the Fence’ at Carrington Park (on the corner of Bentinck and Durham streets) to symbolise the one-in-three women who experience family violence.

The Western Advocate will also run a daily column during the 16 Days of Activism to detail the various services available to support victims of domestic violence.
