Jake Carroll was just 18 when he died in his sleep in August from a genetic heart condition.
His father, Dave Carroll, also died from a heart condition 10 years earlier.
Jake’s mother Susan Hurt said her son had been a member of the club for about four years, and competed regularly in a number of competitions, winning some trophies.
He actually competed the day before his death, winning a trophy, but organisers forgot to bring it on the day and he was supposed to pick it up the next morning.
“He came second in his class, but didn’t actually get the trophy,” Mrs Hurt said.
Understandably, the last few months have been an horrendous ordeal for Jake’s family. Not only have they had to try and cope with his sudden and unexpected passing, but his younger brother Joshua has also undergone intensive medical treatment for a similar condition.
“Both boys had holes in their heart repaired when they were babies and never had a problem; Jake had all his medical check ups and the doctors said they are fine, we don’t need to see them anymore,” Mrs Hurt said. But on August 17 Jake went to bed, and tragically never woke up.
Mrs Hurt said since she lost Jake the motorcycle club had been incredibly good to her, and she wanted to thank them, not only for naming the trophy in Jake’s honour, but for everything they have done.
The trophy was awarded to Jaiden Graham at the club’s annual presentation night in December.
“The club formed a guard of honour at Jake’s funeral and all the riders wore their jerseys, and the club has kept in touch with me and all of Jake’s mates,” Mrs Hurt said.
She said she was proud they had named a trophy in Jake’s honour.
“Josh and I were there on the night and the trophy was the biggest one there, Josh said to me, ‘mum he’s got the biggest award in the club’,” she said.
