Bathurst secured the meeting with one match-up still to play and Phil Campbell put the icing on the cake for the team with a 3 and 2 win over Mick Haydon to close out the round.
First-time division one player Geoff McDonald showed no nerves as he got Bathurst off to a great start with a big 6 and 4 win over Paul Jones.
Ray Stapley, a late inclusion to the Bathurst team, kept the ball rolling with a 4 and 3 win against Rod McDonald, putting the side within a single win of taking out the round.
Those plans were briefly put on hold following team captain Darryn Bruce’s 3 and 2 loss to Jacob Moodie, but Scott Matheson won a thriller – that went all the way to a 20th hole against Peter Kirwan – to wrap it up for the team.
Club captain Manuel Pro said all he wanted to see from the Bathurst team was encouraging golf, so the win was a bonus.
“We felt that Cowra would have been the favourites because our team is still in a building stage. I was quite surprised with the result, but I was hopeful that we could do it. Even if we had lost 3-2 I would have been happy, so to win 4-1 is amazing,” he said.
“For Geoff McDonald to win 6 and 4 was great. Ray Stapley was filling in for us after Julian Curran was a late withdrawal. Ray was brought into the team only on Friday night, but he played very well.”
It was a great day of golf for the majority of the Bathurst pennants teams, with wins in three out of four divisions.
Division two were dealt a big blow, however, in a 5-0 defeat to Parkes.
Adrian Haynes came closest to helping his team avoid the whitewash, but went down by one.
Things were all too easy for the division three outfit who, like their top-ranked counterparts, produced a 4-1 win over Cowra.
Scott McMah’s narrow 19-hole defeat was the only thing separating Bathurst from the clean sweep.
Sauro Gregori, Steve Darlington and Jaise Delaney were all successful, as was John Perfect, who picked up the biggest win of the weekend for Bathurst: a 7 and 5 victory.
The biggest nail-biter for Bathurst was in division four, where the team recovered from a 2-1 deficit to make a comeback against Parkes.
Greg Murray got Bathurst off to a winning start, but Clint Lamb and Al Hammond’s losses led to an uphill battle.
Thrilling 19th and 20th-hole wins for Ray Curtis and team captain Nick Winterton respectively turned that battle Bathurst’s way.
The Bathurst division one team gets a break next week before taking on Forbes at Cowra on February 14.
Divisions two and four will play Cowra at home this Sunday.
