Bathurst's junior track cyclists have continued to make an impact on the big stage as they picked up a swag of medals and personal best times from the recent NSW Under 15s and 17s Track Champion-ships at Dunc Gray Velodrome.
A group of six riders – some setting their aims high, while others hoping to just gain valuable experience on the boards – came back from the competition with four medals against the best the state has to offer.
Bathurst track coach Damien Bennett said the growth of junior track cycling in Bathurst brought about the need to create separate coaching sessions for different age groups, and it’s working like a charm.
“As the kids jumped up the years we needed to create a Wednesday session for the older riders ... because it was hard to coach a group ranging from under 5s to 17s. It’s coming along really well now,” he said.
“Catering coaching to these older kids has helped them mix it with those other kids around the state who have been getting that similar training.
“Generally, track is starting to grow in Bathurst and that’s mostly because of our juniors.”
Leading the way for the Bathurst contingent was Eliza Bennett, who brought back a silver and two bronze medals from the championships.
Her silver was agonisingly close to being gold given she was denied by just one tenth of a second in the standing lap 250 metres.
A time of 22.449 seconds was .11 away from Central Coast rider Elizabeth Huggins.
Her two bronze medals came from the 500m time trial and the sprint.
That tally was almost three as Bennett came fourth in the keirin.
Emily Watts was the other medallist for Bathurst when she picked up a bronze from her pet 2000m pursuit event in the under 17s age group.
In what was the most thrilling race for the club members over the weekend, Watts duelled with Hunter District rider Lucie Fityus in a back-and-forth tussle.
Watts was able to claim the prize in a time of 2:44.907, just six hundredths ahead.
In her other results, Watts avoided a crash in the dying stages of the scratch race to finish fifth and also scored an eighth in the 500m time trial.
Kalinda Robinson was denied a bronze medal by just three hundredths in the standing lap with her next best result in a full program being a sixth in the time trial.
Jed Powell took his first shot at championship racing on Dunc Gray Velodrome and the under 15s rider had plenty to be happy about with a seventh in the standing one lap dash and a fourth in his keirin heat against strong competition.
Under 17s rider Patrick Ryan also contested a wide range of events in a challenging age group, looking to learn from some of NSW’s big up and coming names.
Zoe Hobson was one of the team’s biggest improvers as she knocked 10 seconds of her previous best mark in the 2000m pursuit.
