While many of the Liqui-Moly Bathurst 12 Hour fans would prefer to have secured themselves a comfy hotel room for the
weekend, there is no doubt that the closer to the Mount you can be, the better – even if that means roughing it in a tent.
Gold Coast husband and wife Graham and Rae Angus, and their long-time friend Peter Smith, have secured themselves two powered sites in close proximity to the garages.
Mr Smith may be a Bathurst-newbie, but the Anguses have been coming to the city for decades for the Bathurst 1000 and, in more recent times, the 12 Hour.
“We’ve done several, but not constantly,” Mr Angus said. “We incorporate it with a holiday – it’s a holiday trip.”
But this trio aren’t your regular racegoers.
They are also volunteers, who work behind the scenes at these kinds of races to ensure everything runs smoothly.
It’s their job to organise an office space prior to the 12 Hour and to hand out shirts to other staff.
“Both Peter and I have volunteered for the Gold Coast race for 25 years, but this is his first time in Bathurst,” Mr Angus said.
And Mr Smith is impressed.
“I’m just overwhelmed by the standard here,” he said. “We drove around this morning and you just couldn’t duplicate it.”
