IT is not often a driver can go into a race like the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour with a home ground advantage, but that is exactly what driver, television personality and Perthville resident Grant Denyer will do this weekend.

Mr Denyer was this week announced as the replacement driver for Scott Pye in the Maranello Motorsport entry in Sunday's big race.
He will join Tony D’Alberto, Mika Salo and Toni Vilander in the 2014 race-winning team.
Mr Denyer said he couldn’t believe he was joining such a strong team for his first Class A Bathurst 12 Hour start.
“It is like a dream gig come true. This is an outstanding event that I’ve looked up to since I was a really little kid. It was the first motor sport event I ever went to, so for me it is the pinnacle,” he said.
“So to be in a car like this with ex-Ferrari formula one driver Mika Salo in it, and my regular teammate, and it’s the car I won races in last year, that is a pretty magic combo. It’s pretty cool.”
Having such an experienced team will be a big advantage for Mr Denyer, but with three Bathurst 1000 starts under his belt, he will be just as much of a threat to the success of the other competing teams.
“I think our combination is healthy, I know the car’s quick. I have a feeling there might be a lot of accidents throughout the race so it will be a matter of being there in the last couple of hours and, if we are, we’ve got a good chance,” he said. “I’m mega nervous, because the calibre is outstanding – the kind of cars, from all over the world, the calibre of the drivers – it is going to be a wild event.”
Unlike all the other drivers tackling the Mount, Mr Denyer also has the luxury of living at home over the course of the event.
“I can stay in my own bed – that’s my secret advantage,” he joked.
On a more serious note, though, the experienced driver said that Bathurst continuing to host the 12 Hour was an excellent opportunity for the city as the event continues to grow.
“The calibre of this event is extraordinary, the live television makes the world of difference,” Mr Denyer said.
