With momentum building to the event, which will be staged from March 1-6, there’s a frenzy of activity at the new $1.5 million Vale Road bike park.
Although only a temporary measure for the nationals, the grandstand being installed at the BMX track will be capable of seating 850 fans.
Staff from Bathurst Regional Council are racing to the finish line to get the complex into race trim, with 10,000 competitors and fans expected to converge on the city for the event.
Cr Greg Westman, a BMX rider, has been following the development of the complex from the start and can’t wait for the action to begin.
“Having the fans in the grandstand at that starting point should really add to the atmosphere for everyone involved,” he said.
“I would expect everyone would be screaming their heads off. Because the grandstand is right at the top of the track on the skyline, it will give a great view all the way down to the finish line.”
Cr Westman said entries for the nationals have closed and record numbers will be in town fighting for glory.
“There’s a number of reasons for the popularity of this event. I think the first is that it’s being held back in NSW for the first time in nine years. It’s also an Olympic year and spots in the Australian team are on the line and it’s a brand new track that’s something completely different for the sport,” he said.
“In total, 3273 entries have been received. All ages, all abilities. Something for everyone. Some riders may also be doubling up and contesting a couple of different classes.
“So far the feedback about the track has all been positive. When it comes to riding BMX Australia, this is as good as it gets. The gradient is what makes it so special. Every straight has a big sweeping turn, dropping down a level to the next.”
According to Cr Westman, a highlight of the week will be on the Thursday evening.
“It’s being billed as the Thunder Down Under,” he said. “Huge lights will be set up to illuminate the track.
“It’s like an event within an event, but it’s going to be spectacular. There’s even international riders coming just to take part.
“The good thing is that entry is free and I would urge any residents who haven’t had a look at the new track to get up there and see what all the fuss is about.”
