The government support for an uninterrupted seaside cycle route between Burnie and Wynyard has been welcomed by the mayors of both councils.

"The region will benefit from any investment into this project, which will create jobs and provide the Coast with a scenic cycling tourist drawcard," Braddon MHR Roger Jaensch said.

The project will "develop a first-class cycling and walking track along a beautiful stretch of the North-West Coast", Mr Jaensch said.

It will also advance the Coastal Pathways Project that will eventually stretch more than 100 kilometres and connect North-West cities and towns with a separated cycle route.

The Burnie City Council and Waratah-Wynyard Council will submit a joint funding application through the federal government's National Stronger Regions Fund.

"The use of the corridor for the coastal pathway will help to address safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike," Waratah-Wynyard mayor Robby Walsh said. "It will also mean our communities will be offering one of the best shared pathways in the state with some magnificent scenery along the way."

The government said it still supported preserving unused rail corridors for possible future use.

If the project proceeds, the rail corridor land and relevant fixed infrastructure would continue to be held by the Crown, Mr Jaensch said.
