SEVEN times on Saturday the St Pat's penalty corner battery lined up and waited to fire in an attempt on the Bathurst City goal, but come full-time in their women's Premier League Hockey match the blue and whites had failed to find the mark.
Those missed chances hurt as Bathurst City emerged as 2-0 victors at Bob Roach Field.
Though the Saints could consider themselves unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty stroke when a defender was struck by the ball while standing behind the goalkeeper - especially when City were given one down the opposite end - they knew they had their chances.
"Unfortunately we just weren't able to take advantage of our chances, we just can't rely on the umpire to give us those penalties," Saints skipper Jodi Webb said.
"It was disappointing, but it goes both ways, you win some and you lose some unfortunately.
"I think we had the ball up there and we definitely created opportunities, we just didn't find the mark."
While it was a disappointed Saints playing group after 70 minutes, City were delighted to get a win over their Bathurst rivals.
They too could have done better with their penalty corners - converting one of eight attempts - but caretaker coach Jess Hotham was pleased with how the players adjusted to a new system.
Just as pleasing was the performances of some of City's Premier League newcomers, Grace Schumacher causing plenty of headaches for the Saints' defence while Tirah Jarvis made it two goals in as many weeks.
"They started off a bit panicky - everyone was running around like chooks with their heads cut off - but once they got into it, it was good," Hotham said.
"I think we always had control in the game, it was just a few breakaways that Pat's seem to get and stuff like that. With the new system the girls used this week, they played unbelievable.
"They've [Pat's] been doing really well, so that was definitely a big win for us and a big plus for the girls. It was our first week using a new system and it's pulled off a 2-0 win against a good side."
As City adjusted to their new system in the opening stages, experienced Saint Kristy Ekert picked off a number of passes and linked nicely with Ella Menzies.
But while that pair threatened, that was all they managed. Instead it was City who opened scoring.
The goal came as Schumacher made a good run down the right wing then picked out an unmarked Jarvis on the far post.
Jarvis tucked her shot away to give her side a 1-0 lead at the break, but when play resumed in the second half again it was the Saints who looked dangerous in attack.
City had to absorb 10 minutes of sustained pressure before they were able to apply some of their own, Schumacher drawing a top stick-save from Saints goalkeeper Tracey Gunning.
City earned six penalty corners in the next 11 minutes and scored from the second via Kelly Baker.
That made it 2-0, but the Saints still had hope as they survived a Jarvis penalty stroke which was fired wide of the mark.
However, in the final 10 minutes City repelled two more penalty corners and with 58 seconds left scrambled the ball off the line to finish with a clean sheet.
