PENRITH coach Anthony Griffin has been forced to shuffle his line-up for tomorrow’s NRL match against Canberra at Carrington Park after talented young playmaker Te Maire Martin was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Martin was forced from the field last Sunday after he fell awkwardly on his shoulder following contact with Valentine Holmes.
After the game Martin adopted a positive approach, even though it was suspected he had fractured his shoulder.
“It’s not too bad right now. I can sort of move it around, but I’ve never had one before, so we’ll see what it is,” he said.
But after the 20-year-old had scans on Monday, it was revealed he had a displaced shoulder and would require surgery.
Penrith supremo Phil Gould confirmed the news on Tuesday evening.
“Te Maire Martin – fractured glenoid [shoulder]. Displaced. Terrible injury, very painful and will require surgery. Unfortunately out for season,” Gould tweeted.
The news came as a disappointment for the emerging talent who played with the Junior Kiwis the past two years, but he knows he still has plenty of time to make his presence felt in the NRL
“I was just getting my body used to it [NRL]. But if I can get the injuries out of the way now while I’m young, it’s just recovering now and going from there,” he said.
“The good thing is we’ve got a bit of depth around the halves and hooker area. One goes out, one comes in.”
Martin is not the only player to be ruled out of tomorrow’s match in Bathurst, with centre Waqa Blake unavailable after hurting his hip making a try saving tackle in the 20-18 loss to Cronulla.
“I tried to stride out, but I just couldn’t run,” Blake said on Sunday evening.
“It didn’t work so I went back in, tried to numb it up and tried to go again in the second half and it still hurt ... it didn’t want to go.”
Dean Whare was originally named to replace Blake in what would have marked his return from a calf tear, but on Wednesday night he joined the list of injured Panthers.
He suffered a knee injury at training and had scans yesterday to confirm a suspected torn ACL.
If that is the case, it will end the Kiwi international’s season after just one appearance in 2016 for the Panthers.
Though a replacement centre is yet to be named, Peter Wallace has been moved from hooker into the halves alongside Jamie Soward to cover for Martin.
That pair played in the halves at Carrington Park last year when the Panthers crushed the Gold Coast Titans 40-0.
The Penrith number nine jumper for tomorrow’s match will be worn by James Segeyaro, who returns from a broken arm.
Tomorrow’s match kicks off at 3pm, with gates at Carrington Park to open at 10am.
