Audiences continue to flock to Rosemary Valadon’s breath-taking survey exhibition A Sensual World which opened last month. Valadon’s sumptuous still life paintings are reminiscent of seventeenth-century Dutch masters; luminous and opulent.

‘Love this exhibition. Has a big ‘wow’ factor’ commented one BRAG visitor? It’s not the first time Valadon’s work has been paid such a complement. In fact visitors to BRAG have been bountiful with their praise for the exhibition, ‘Quite fabulous (takes us away from the quite ordinary!)’, ‘Vibrant, colourful, exciting, and positive’, ‘Had to come back again. Love it’ and ‘Very easy to get lost in. Amazing’ are just a few messages left in the comment book.
‘Have we found the next Margaret Olley?’ was another. Indeed, Valadon’s work definitely draws on the legacy of several of Australia’s greatest female painters; Margaret Olley, Grace Cossington Smith and Margaret Preston. Each skilfully narrated Australian femininity and the domestic aesthetic for us and Valadon has provided her own strong and stirring reinterpretation.
This timely survey looks at 25 years of Valadon’s work; from the Goddess, Finding the Feminine and Wicked Women series which reinterpret myths and stereotypes of women, to her latest large-scale still life panoramas that celebrate the rich experience of living in Hill End, where she has been based for over a decade.
