THE Bathurst Cycling Club topped the medal count at the 2016 New South Wales Masters Road Championships, with an impressive 16 podium finishes to defeat big Sydney club Sutherland in Orange last weekend.
Sutherland claimed 12 medals, eight of them gold, while another Central West club in Dubbo won nine medals to also defeat a number of major Sydney and Canberra outfits.
The championships were contested in five different age categories across three different events, beginning with a road race held in Molong on Saturday.
The following day saw a criterium held in Orange, while the meet concluded with an individual time trial at Sir Jack Brabham Park in Orange on Monday.
The Bathurst charge was led by Charles Gascoyne, who is based in Orange but rides for the Bathurst club.
He picked up wins in his age group in both the criterium and the time trial.
Among the others to win gold were Stacey Fish and Bruce Goddard, who each took home gold in their respective age groups in the road race.
Other medal winners from the Bathurst entries were Peta Cutler, Rosemary Hastings, Steve Bennett, Richard Hobson, Jim Lavis, Graham Stait and Mark Windsor.
The close proximity of the titles allowed Bathurst to field a high number of riders, with 34 in total – 26 in the men’s events and eight in the women’s.
As well as the medallists, Bathurst was also represented by Karl Addison, Roy and Tony Barlow, Kevin Bell, Steve Bennet, Steve Dunstall, Luke Gillmer, Andrew Gordon, John How, David McKellar, Ryan O’Donnell, Glen Partridge, Graeme Peadon, Stuart Renshaw, Tim Roebuck, Brad Roughly, Steve Scott, Robert Stephen, Daniel Went and Peter Wilson.
The female competitors included Catherine Adams, Jill Harris, Jette McKellar, Marian Renshaw and Donna Scott.
