Close friends Tommy Griffiths and Michael Furner decided to take their love of “fringe and experimental music” to the next level by developing a concert series that would unearth local performers and interesting local venues.
“Bathurst has some really incredible spaces, but they aren’t used,” Mr Griffiths said.
“We kind of just decided to follow this and spitball some ideas that developed over a few beers.”
Vagrants became a reality when the men were able to secure five venues to host the performances: an abandoned office, an upstairs room on the boutique Keppel St strip, a balcony of Bathurst Court House, an underground stables beneath George Street, and another location that is yet to be revealed.
Mr Griffiths said it was surprisingly easy to find 10 local artists to perform their experimental music to audiences.
“All these performers are really keen to do this stuff that is pushing the boundaries,” he said.
“Probably the most challenging thing was to get the spaces involved, because most of them are privately owned.”
The Vagrants project has five dates locked in for 2016, the first being June 11.
“It is in an abandoned office in the Scott Centre and it has The Rangoons and Aloha Units,” Mr Griffiths said.
“The one that is happening on July 30 is under George Street in all these tunnels, so it will be cool and creepy.”
Performances in the Vagrants series will also be held on July 9, August 6 and August 20.
Mr Griffiths said the venue for the final performance will be announced on the Vagrants’ social media accounts further down the track, so keep an eye out for it.
Tickets are available at www.vagrants.com.au for $15 per person, per venue. This is an 18+ event.
The capacity of each venue varies, making it important to secure your tickets early for these intimate performances.
