IT’S been a long time since boxing has found its way to Oberon’s doorstep but the town will revel in it once again as hometown fighter David Sellers fights for a state title at the Oberon RSL Club this Saturday night.
Sellers will be going up against Daniel Parkinson for the NSW Cruiserweight title in a packed fight card dubbed the “Battle of the Bron”.
It will only have been a fortnight since Parkinson won their previous bout after a tight, split-points decision, and event promoter Nathan Swadling didn’t waste time getting a rematch together in front of Sellers’ home crowd.
“We couldn’t pinpoint exactly how long it’s been but we believe it’s been over 40 years since there’s been a boxing match in Oberon, so there’s a lot of excitement in town. Dave Sellers is a local boy who has a very strong following. We sold over 140 tickets to just those from Oberon to watch him in his last match,” Swadling said.
“Both of them are ready to go and there will obviously be no surprise factor to each other’s game now. Daniel Parkinson’s a former Australian champion with multiple state championships and a great fight record. “
“Of his 27 fights 22 of those have been won by knockout.
“Harry Fitzpatrick and I have been training Dave hard for this and I don’t think he will be leaving this one in the judges’ hands. He’ll be going for the knockout.
“Daniel Parkinson is a very open fighter and stands square on.
“He didn’t seem to want to do the work last fight. Dave fights very tight on his inside, comes forward a lot and brings the work rate.
I believe Dave’s now a whole new animal compared to the last time they fought.”
Oberon’s representation on the night will not just be limited to Sellers either as fellow local fighters Adam Powell, Luke Kirby, Trent Guihot and Mike Gudgeon will also be taking part.
Swadling said the entire card is a great chance for the town to come down and support their local friends.
“We’ve got five local fighters on the card, all really well known, and we’ve managed to match them all up nicely,” he said.
“I think when Dave eventually makes his way into the ring it will lift the roof off the place.”
General admission tickets are $30 and VIP Tickets are $130 per seat. For further details on the event call 0417 061 646 or email info@angryrichard.com
Official weigh-in takes place at 11am in at the club and the first bout for the evening will start at 6:30pm.
