Today is National Simultaneous Storytime, an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books.
The event, now in its 16th year, is colourful, vibrant and fun.
It aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the national curriculum.
Bathurst Regional Library’s acting outreach programs officer Chris Halpin said the library is ready to welcome children and parents of all ages to join in the fun.
Because this year’s book is about hats, Mr Halpin said children are encouraged to wear their craziest hat, and be in the chance to win a prize.
Mr Halpin said I Got This Hat will be read to children at playgroups, child care centres and libraries across the country at exactly 11am.
“Some groups have special guests – everyone from politicians to local celebrities,” he said.
Mayor Gary Rush is taking up reading duties in Bathurst, and will also be handing out prizes for the crazy hat competition.
Mr Halpin said he is hoping as many kids as possible are at the library for the event.
“It’s all about getting them involved in reading and having fun,” he said.
“Normally we have a colouring-in competition, but this year we thought we would try something different with the crazy hat competition, so we hope the kids really enjoy it.”
