With just a week of autumn to go, temperatures are set to plummet to below average for the rest of May.
The temperature today is predicted to reach 15 degrees, but by Saturday the mercury is expected to only reach a maximum of 10.
Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke warned yesterday that the cold snap will start tomorrow.
“A pretty strong cold front will pass through the region from this Thursday and that’ll cool things down and possibly bring some rain,” he said.
“You’ll get 10 to 20 millimetres [of rain] from Thursday morning to Saturday evening. Saturday will be coldest; it’ll struggle to get to 10 degrees and the wind chill will certainly make it feel like winter.”
More frost is also predicted over the coming week, with the best chance on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
Despite the cold end to the season, Mr Dutschke said this autumn has been much slower to cool than in recent years.
“For Bathurst, typically it cools below freezing in Bathurst by late April or early May, but it hasn’t done so yet,” he said.
“This year will be the latest it has done so in 21 years [1995]. In that year [1995], it didn’t fall below zero until June 18.”
Chifley police yesterday reminded motorists to drive to the conditions and be aware of hazards.
“Adjusting your speed to suit the conditions and using your headlights during fog and rain can help make the roads safer for all of us,” a post to the command’s Facebook page read yesterday.
