After 12 months of continuous losses, the Oberon Tigers brought the three Rose brothers, George, Matt, and Trent on board, hoping they would give the dispirited team a boost and provide a bit of inspiration to the junior players. The plan worked, with the Tigers winning all seven of their games this season.
The team has recaptured the imagination of the small Oberon community with more than 1000 fans turning up at their games.
Matt Rose said the support from the community has been terrific, adding it is the first time he and his two brothers have had the chance to play together week after week.
He said the atmosphere at a Tiger’s game is something you just don’t get anywhere else.
“There’s always a great roll up and people are just so enthusiastic,” Rose said.
“There are some really good local boys on the team.
“Oberon was really competitive but just couldn’t get the win.
“We’ve had a taste of it, and now everyone wants to win,” he said.
He said that with Bathurst so close to Oberon he hopes there is a big Oberon turn out for the game.
“If even a quarter of our followers turned up it would be great,” Rose said.
Recruiting committee member Ross Gibson, who signed the Rose brothers, said bringing new blood into the Tigers had paid dividends.
“We wouldn’t have survived if we continued being uncompetitive,” he said. “The support from the Oberon community has been fantastic. The local members of the team really stepped up and we have won the last five weeks in all three grades. That’s never happened before. Winning is a bit contagious.”
Mr Gibson said the club has a great committee, great sponsors and hard workers.
“Everyone is on a roller coaster,” he said.
