The lecture, “Beyond Belief: How we find meaning, with or without religion”, will be delivered by social researcher and best- selling author Hugh Mackay.
His most recent book on the same topic, Beyond Belief, will form the basis of the lecture and likely ignite debate over religion’s place in modern times.
Mr Mackay will contend that while the traditional idea of God is no longer as prominent as it once was, the search for a sense of meaning still holds strong.
In doing so, the social researcher will examine the various ways humans try to find transcendence in their often stridently materialistic lives and consider what may be lost with the wholesale casting out of organised religion.
Mr Mackay strongly endorses the Christian ideal of the good life – a life lived for others – but acknowledges there are many pathways to that same goal, not all of which are religious.
The lecture will be part of CSU’s Explorations Series, which is one aspect of its Community-University Partnership (CUP) program.
Bathurst head of campus Chika Anyanwu expects those attending the lecture will really respond to the topic and find a lot of value in what Mr Mackay has to say.
“As a social psychologist and social commentator who has become a household name across Australia and the world through his works, it is very exciting and will be a great pleasure to have Hugh back on our Bathurst campus to discuss some of these burning issues with our Bathurst and regional communities,” he said.
The lecture will be held at CSU on Thursday, June 16 from 6.30pm in Building 1292, Room 223.
Light refreshments will be available after the lecture, and those attending will also have the opportunity to buy books or have them signed by Mr Mackay.
