Mayor Gary Rush said this year’s planting program is among the biggest undertaken by council and includes three major project areas.
He said around 500 trees will be planted on the two main highway entrances to Bathurst, along the Mid-Western and Mitchell highways.
Ornamental species will be planted on both sides of the highways where possible.
“The entrance statements will feature poplar and ornamental pistachio trees on the Mid-Western Highway and maple and ornamental pistachio trees on the Mitchell Highway,” Cr Rush said.
“Across the city, council is also working on its annual street tree planting program, planting replacement trees throughout Bathurst as well as installing street trees within newly-developed residential subdivisions.
“The street tree species being planted within these areas vary according to existing street tree themes.
“More than 290 replacement and new subdivision trees will be planted this year.”
In addition, the first stage of a three-year program to install a new street tree avenue theme within Durham Street will begin in coming weeks.
Stage one will involve the removal of existing crepe myrtle trees on Durham Street, between William and Stewart streets, and the planting of replacement trees.
To avoid overhead electrical wires in the future, council has selected ornamental pistachio trees for replanting between George and Stewart streets and taller maple trees will be replanted between William and George streets.
“The chosen species will create a bold and colourful avenue, particularly in autumn,” Cr Rush said
All new trees will be of mature stock specimens, each around two metres high.
Cr Rush said council’s ongoing program of community planting days will continue across winter as well, with community tree planting days held monthly at various locations.
The next community planting day will be held this Sunday, June 19 at Hector Park in Vittoria Street, with volunteer helpers welcome.
Tree planting will begin at 9am.
