Thousands of people have made use of the Bullet since the introduction of a return daily rail service to Sydney four years ago.
It was a brave move at the time by the O’Farrell Government to start the daily rail service after the previous government had said for more than a decade that it was not viable.
But Rail Action Bathurst, led by John Hollis, put together a formidable campaign to ensure the daily rail service became a reality and passengers have supported it in great numbers ever since.
The announcement on Monday that the state government was contributing $700,000 to seal a new car park at the railway station is further proof of the service’s incredible success.
Commuters were left in limbo after vacant land at the station that served as a makeshift car park was fenced off to allow the soil to be tested for possible contamination.
Other parking spaces at the station filled quickly each day and unlucky motorists were pushed out on the street to try their luck – hardly an ideal situation.
It has taken some time, but now we are finally going to see a real solution to parking pressures at the station.
Not surprisingly, Mr Hollis was celebrating Monday’s announcement and the whole community should welcome any infrastructure upgrades at the railway station precinct.
Bathurst has a long, proud rail history dating back to former prime minister Ben Chifley and beyond.
For a long time it looked as though the golden days of Bathurst rail were well behind us, but the Bathurst Bullet has heralded an on-track revival.
And to think they said it couldn’t be done.
