The car, which contained an 18-year-old male driver, a 16-year-old female and a two-month-old male, was travelling south on Deep Creek Road, Wynyard.
Acting Sergeant Steve Crisp said the Toyota Corolla collided with the unladen truck which was travelling west on the Bass Highway.
Contact was made between the passenger side of the vehicle and the front of the truck.
The crash happened about 5.13pm Tuesday.
“The truck was going the speed limit and he was unable to stop,” Acting Sergeant Crisp said.
“At this particular stage we are pretty confident it was inattention in regards to the driver of the vehicle. He failed to give way at this intersection,” he said.
SES crews were the first on the scene and closed the road shortly after the crash.
Acting Sergeant Crisp said they were unable to determine if the baby was travelling in the back of the vehicle.
Accident investigators remained at the scene until about 9.30pm and the road was reopened.
The female passenger of the vehicle is in a critical condition, while the male driver is in a serious condition.
Acting Sergeant Crisp said they believed the driver of the Toyota Corolla was crossing the Bass Highway to continue heading south on Deep Creek Road.
The truck driver has been treated for shock, but did not sustain any serious injuries.
The occupants of the Toyota are from Henrietta.
