Over the past week, Russell Street and Kings Parade have transformed into a winter wonderland for what is arguably the biggest legacy of Bathurst’s bicentenary year.
Bathurst Regional Council has pulled out all the stops to ensure every member of the family can find joy in the festival.
Whether you’re keen to step onto the frozen surface of the McDonald’s Bathurst Ice Rink, or want to cradle a serving of pumpkin soup as you watch historic buildings light up with wonderful projections, there is no shortage of things to do.
The opening night, appropriately named Ignite the Night, will start at 4pm on Saturday.
We had a lot of fun designing it because the theme of fire and ice is such a good theme.
- Creative director Penelope Kendall
Highlights include live music on the main stage from Matt Boylan Smith, Niamh McClean and Arabesk, a wide variety of food stalls and ‘fire and ice’ themed illuminations.
The illuminations have been designed by Be Productions, based in Alexandria, and include displays on Bathurst Court House, down Ribbon Gang Lane and on the old TAFE building in William Street.
Creative director Penelope Kendall hopes people will get a lot of enjoyment out of the illuminations, particularly when they see them for the first time on opening night.
“We had a lot of fun designing it because the theme of fire and ice is such a good theme,” she said.
The range of local food, wine and beer on offer will be a great accompaniment to the atmosphere of the night.
Among the options are pizza, pasta, lamb stew, curry and your usual carnival-style food.
Those who attended the festival last year are encouraged to dig out their Bathurst200 glasses to sample the wine and beer available.
Alternatively, people can purchase new Bathurst Winter Festival glasses on the night.
