The stage, which finished in Limoges after a 237 kilometre ride from Saumer on Wednesday morning, saw Renshaw finish 126th, a minute and 14 seconds behind Kittel.
Renshaw’s Dimension Data team-mate Mark Cavendish was eighth, giving up his sprinter’s green jersey to Peter Sagan.
Kittel had to wait for confirmation of his win having only edged out Frenchman Bryan Coquard by millimetres.
After a four-man breakaway group established a six minute lead, Dimension Data were among the main teams to peg them back.
A rise with around six kilometres remaining forced a split in the peloton which saw Renshaw lose touch with Cavendish.
It was left to Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen to try and lead out Cavendish, but he was unable to find his way to the front.
