Thanks to a kind-hearted parishioner, the historic church and its hall are set to undergo a major renovation.
In May 2014, the Western Advocate reported that one parishioner had bequeathed $400,000 to the church which will now help fund a major revamp of the 1872 church at the corner of George and Howick streets.
Reverend Dave Whittingham said while many changes would be made, the church’s links to the past would remain.
“We’ll work hard to remember the heritage that’s there as well as working towards the future,” he said.
“We’re trying to preserve the history, but will also make it more accessible for the 21st century.
“We want to make it more accessible as a church building so we’re going to be doing things to make it easier for people with young children and the elderly.”
It’s just such a big thing that we’re really thankful for.
- Rev Dave Whittingham
A new entrance will be built on the Howick Street side with room for cars to drop off people at the door.
The entry ramp will be upgraded and more toilets added. Some pews will be altered and others removed to allow for more people to sit during services and to make the area more accessible.
A cry room will be available for parents of young children who feel they may need privacy. Also, a connecting hallway will be constructed between the church and the hall on the same site.
“The church was built so long ago for the people of Bathurst to hear about Jesus and we want to keep doing that,” Reverend Whittingham said.
“I’d really like to have our Christmas service in there, but I don’t know if that’s a bit too ambitious.”
Reverend Whittingham said they would not be able to afford such extensive renovations without the help of the generous parishioner.
“It’s just such a big thing that we’re really thankful for.”
The total upgrade is valued at $450,000.
