Emergency services were called to the Sofala Road, 1.6 kilometres north of Pyrmonts Lane at Peel, just after 1pm on Tuesday with reports a car had left the road.
Initial police investigations suggest a white Toyota sedan, being driven by a man, left the roadway and crashed into a tree.
The damaged car came to rest on a downhill stretch of the road near a sweeping bend.
Police reports said the driver, and only occupant of the car, died at the scene.
Late Tuesday he was yet to be formally identified.
A crime scene was established and investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
A NSW Rural Fire Service spokesperson said crews from Wattle Flat and Eglinton brigades were initially called to the scene, and then returned on Tuesday evening for the recovery process.
“It was a tragic outcome and unfortunately something that is all too common on rural roads,” the spokesperson said.
Ambulance Service of NSW Superintendent Brad Porter said crews from Bathurst were called to the accident scene just after 1pm.
Sofala Road, between Bathurst and Sofala, was closed for many hours following the accident with traffic diverted around the area.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
