In a video on his website danielricciardo.com, the Australian conceded a recent run of bad luck had started to weigh on him, saying he felt like he'd been "kicked in the nuts".

"I was pretty, I don't know, fed up after the race, fed up, I don't know if that is the word," he said. "I was just a bit disappointed. I was frustrated, you know I commented I was just bored … it was a boring race for me."

Ricciardo finished the British Grand Prix in fourth, but well off the top three including his new Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen, who finished third on track, but was promoted to second after Mercedes' Nico Rosberg received a penalty from the stewards.

Ricciardo's race was compromised on the sixth lap when a virtual safety car was instigated while he was in the pits changing from wet to intermediate tyres.

"I think looking back on it, sure I'm racing, and I guess I'm having fun for the most part, but I was just hoping for a battle hoping for a fight and when you are just driving around in fourth and we lost a lot of time with the virtual safety car so that was just unlucky that was just circumstances, but we lost the leaders and they were well out of sight, well out of sight after that.

"Just driving around in fourth and wanting to show a bit more than just me by myself. So yeah, I don't know, I was hoping for a battle basically and it didn't really come. So I was a bit frustrated from that respect … I wanted a bit more from the race.

"The weekend was OK, did I have fun? The race? So-so not a whole lot."

Ricciardo, who was speaking in London, said he still had hope that his luck would turn soon.

"I'll go back to Monaco for a few days before Budapest, so recharge and having another crack, keep persisting," he said.

"Sport does that, it's up and down and it does kick you in the nuts sometimes I guess, or you feel like it does, or if you are female it kicks you in whatever it is. It definitely gets you down for a little bit, but sure a few good night sleeps and you you get back on it and the fire is back in there so I will keep at it and obviously Budapest has been good to me in the past.

"So I'll go hard and yeah, get some results, have a fight, please, please."
