One of the Group 10 competition’s true journeymen, Steve Lane, has lobbed up at the green and golds in 2016, starring in the club’s first division side for the last two weeks.
That’s a sentence, two years ago, that would never have been written on these pages.
“He was public enemy number one there for a while,” CYMS president Dave Penny laughed.
Lane was part of Mudgee’s 2010 grand final team that lost to CYMS at Wade Park.
“We had a few good run ins with him while he was at Panthers as well … but that’s all water under the bridge now.
“My son Ben plays in (first division too) and came home from training the other night and said how well Steve was fitting in. He loves a joke.
“Last week particularly he was sensational … I think that’s helped get a few of the old boys on side with it all.”
With his unbelievable bag of tricks firmly in tow, Lane’s arrival at CYMS was initiated by his wife’s association with Penny. Katrina Lane is the Aboriginal Community Liaison officer in Orange, and worked alongside Penny at the Orange Police Station.
“It was funny. I wasn’t expecting it. And Steve’s wife Katrina asked me about him joining the club because he wasn’t sure of the response he’d get … but he’s been great,” Penny enthused.
“He’s just back for the love of the game. He just wants to be out there playing a bit of footy.”
Lane appeared with Blayney in premier league in 2015, but will guide Dom Maley’s first division side in its quest for a third straight premiership this season.
It’ll be Lane’s seventh Group 10 club in a stunning career that’s netted the wily play maker premier league premierships with Hawks in 2003 and Mudgee in 2009. He had a season with Cabonne United in Group 11 too.
