After problems at Australia's No.1 V8 race at the Bathurst 1000 in 2014, when the bitumen broke away, the Gold Coast has introduced a new "super-bitumen mix" for the 2.9-kilometre circuit.

It comes after the Gold Coast V8 Supercar race was last week given a three-year extension by the Queensland government.

The government on June 30 signed an agreement with V8 Supercars to keep the both the Gold Coast 600 and the Townsville 400 for three years after some concerns the races were to be shifted to different locations.

Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate and Gold Coast-based V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris - who won Bathurst in 2014 - on Wednesday revealed the harder-wearing bitumen.

"The mix is more secret than the special spices in KFC chicken," Cr Tate said.

"If you are at the race or one of the millions watching this four-day supercar carnival, you do not want to see interruptions should the bitumen fail on a race corner," he said.

"We saw that several years ago at Bathurst and it was a disaster for the event."

The bitumen mix has been developed with the Australian Road Research Board, V8 Supercars and the Queensland asphalt pavement industry and trialled on Paul Morris' race training track at Norwell.

"The bitumen can withstand shearing forces and tyre temperatures that reach 100 degrees-plus," Cr Tate said.

"It is better quality than an airport runway."

Paul Morris said Bathurst's 2014 bitumen breakdown was a "bad look" for the Bathurst City Council.

"The Bathurst City Council is in charge of that road and it failed," Mr Morris said.

"We're not going to have that on our watch."

He said V8 Supercar drivers had already been out to test the new bitumen mix at his company's testing track.

"And so far, it has been really good. If you can't break it out here, you are not going to break it on the track.

"The surface can stay down after the race weekend so there is minimal disruption once the barriers are removed," he said.

Cr Tate said it was the type of improvement that had reduced the original six-month lead-in time for the four-day V8 Supercars race.

"Now it's eight weeks in and four weeks out," he said.

"So it works very well."

The V8 Supercars are televised around Australia, into Europe, the Americas and Asia, drawing millions of eyes to the Gold Coast.
