Thompson's illustrious career with Melbourne Victory ended in May after 11 seasons, 254 games and 96 goals.
There was some talk the 37-year-old might reunite with Ernie Merrick at Wellington Phoenix next season, but the former Victory mentor ruled that out.
The former Bathurst Sportsperson of the Year might still end up at an A-League club, but in the meantime he will try to help Heidelberg win the 2016 National Premier Leagues Victoria title.
The star striker is widely regarded as the greatest player in A-League history.
He was part of three Victory championship-premiership double-winning sides, won an A-League Golden Boot and two Victory medals.
