The Bathurst Cycling Club team of Mark Windsor, Graham Stait, Robert Stephen and Jim Lavis finished the course in a time of 58 minutes and 13.7 seconds to see off their fancied Sydney Cycling Club rivals by over a minute.
Windsor said competition has recently stepped up to another level.
“You used to be able to get a good team together and know you could have a good chance but now with more Sydney clubs taking part it’s much harder. This is an excellent result for the club,” he said.
“The Sydney team had the current state champion [Roger Cull] in their group so we knew they were one of the ones to watch out for.
“With them being so far out in front of us it was hard to gauge where they were at … so we just had to race it hard to the line.
“It was all hills going out and downhill on the way back. Some teams would go out harder on the hills while some would save it for the end. It’s all about the team measuring their effort to ensure they get the most out of each other.”
Sydney CC finished in a time of 59:24.
For Windsor the race was also a great chance for him to re-form an old partnership, made all the greater by the golden result.
“Jim Lavis is a great local sportsman who hasn’t been in cycling for a long time. Rob, myself and Staity were doing these time trial together back in the 80s though,” he said.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve done racing like that together so to get that core group back together was amazing.
“It was a great walk down memory lane. This is great team event where you’ve got to look out for each other, especially on a course like that.”
Bathurst’s other medal from the weekend’s racing came in the men’s all ages championship team time trial through Steve Bennett, Luke Gillmer, Richard Hobson and Ryan O’Donnell.
With a time of 53:47 the team managed to finish just 10 seconds clear of their closest rivals in the battle for the final medal.
Windsor said earning a medal in the all ages division is no easy feat.
“That’s a very competitive age group. To get a bronze there is a great effort. They did everything perfectly,” he said.
“They looked after Steve well on the way out because he’s able to do some amazing turns on the way back when going downhill. Hobbo and Ryan do most of the hard work on the way out and Luke was just smooth the whole time.”
Bathurst picked up top 15 results in team time trial action with the women’s 140yrs+, 90-150yrs and 150-180yrs teams as well as the second 180yrs+ group.
In the “Race for Robbie” scratch races – named in honour of the late Nowra club cyclist – Bathurst found a bronze medal through Hayden Booth in division four while Hobson managed fifth in division two.
Bathurst’s Craig Hutton (22nd) and Josh Corcoran (32nd) took part in the division one race.
Harry Carter contested the elite men’s team time trial with his St George club and finished in sixth.
