On August 6 the two clubs are giving anyone interested the opportunity to try out the sport then the following day at the track the Bathurst Kart Club will host its first ever race day.
Participants in the try-and-drive day have the chance to take part in 10 minute driving sessions and learn more about the sport from local karters who will be on hand to answer any questions.
Bathurst Kart Club president Mark Dunbar said he’s thankful towards the Orange club for using these open days to help to grow the profile of the sport in the Central West.
“It’s important because the two clubs have a close relationship, Bathurst and Orange, and it’s for the betterment of the sport and the kids growing up,” he said.
“Kids in Bathurst now know that they’ve got a club in town that they can join and they can come to Orange for a try-and-drive day, same for the kids in Orange.”
Orange club secretary Greg McLandsborough has enjoyed working with his Bathurst counterparts.
“We’ve always worked closely with Bathurst. A lot of Bathurst members used to be Orange members, and vice versa. There’s only pluses for the sport if we’re working together,” he said.
Dunbar encourages people of all ages to give the sport of karting a try.
“They can learn about the karts and learn respect for each other when it comes to using the racetrack,” he said.
“They quickly build friendships. I know Greg’s young guys and my grandchildren have made friends with people from Queensland to South Australia to Western Australia.
“It’s for all age groups. If people can get to the try-and-drive day people can learn a lot more about it because there will be some very good drivers there and lot of local people that can explain things to them like what it will cost to get into it.”
Local karters will also be racing inbetween the learning sessions on the try-and-drive day, giving everyone on hand the opportunity to see some of the regions top racers in action.
Bathurst Kart Club are still in the planning stages for their own racetrack at Mount Panorama, something the club has been counting down towards since its creation in early 2013.
The Bathurst club will hope to host at least two more race meetings this year.
Anyone interested in taking part in the try-and-drive day can contact McLandsborough on 0414 670 121.
Racing on August 6 gets started from 8.30am.
