Bathurst received more than 37 millimetres of rain between Tuesday night and 9am Wednesday according to Weatherzone.

Mayor Gary Rush said that with such significant rainfall, potholes were inevitable.

“Potholes occur from failures in the seal/wearing surface of the road, with water penetrating into the pavement below. The pavement fails as a result of traffic passing over the weakened surface causing it to break out leaving the resulting pothole behind,” he said. 

“Unfortunately they are an inevitable result from rain that we are experiencing.”

Residents reported seeing potholes all across Bathurst, with many voicing concerns about the Great Western Highway near Raglan, Eleven Mile Drive and many of the roads around Eglinton.

On Wednesday, council reported it was doing its best to repair the damage to the roads.

“At present we have every available resource out patching them in an effort to lesson any inconvenience caused to motorists,” Cr Rush said.

“It is a situation that councils across the region are battling as a result of the wet weather.”

While motorists are frustrated by the appearance of potholes all together, the biggest issue is the reoccurring problems on Eglinton Road near All Saints’ College.

The stretch in front of the school was resurfaced twice in recent months, with the latest occurring at the end of June.

A mix of large and small potholes have already appeared.

Lisa Avnell wrote on Facebook that the potholes were “frustrating”, while Karen Michelle said the road has become “like an obstacle course”.

Cr Rush confirmed there were more issues with Eglinton Road and it would need to be repaired a third time.

“Council crews are patching the road today and will continue to do so until the weather is dry enough for the section of road to be repaired to address the previous failure in the surface,” he said.

Residents are asked to report potholes to council when they appear to ensure they are repaired quickly.
