Social Bowls
Tuesday afternoon social competition saw three rinks in action with the daily rink winners Noel Witney, Paul Stueckrat and Ian Dews taking a 24-17 win over Allan Clark, Bruce Parr and Ron McGarry on rink one.
Right next door on rink two, Terry Clark, Barry Quigley and Mick Simmons scored a 23-17 win over Garry Cameron, Barry Quigley and Greg Quartly-Scott and then topped off a good day on the green, by winning the jackpot in the clubhouse to make it a great day.
The final match saw Ryce Harvey and Jim Clark score an impressive 25-12 win over Paul Kennedy and Gus Thurgood. The Harvey team were in control, scoring wins in 13 ends to 7 and finishing with a one, two then three on the last three ends, the Harvey team dominated the scoring and won the game comfortably.
Saturday was another perfect Bathurst Winters. Frank Farrell, John Patten and Daryl Bellamy scored a comfortable 28-16 win over Mick McDonald, Greg Quartly-Scott and Ken Hartwig on rink five but it was not all one-way traffic. The McDonald team scored a three in the first which was immediately countered with a four from the Farrell team then a two and one from the McDonald team then a two from the Farrell team. After all this initial activity the scores were six all at the end of the sixth end. The first to break were Farrell team who started a winning charge in the seventh end winning six of the next seven ends to lead by 18-11. They capped off a strong performance with a five-shot win on the last end to win by 12.
David Josh and the wily Jim Fry were 17 shot winners at 28-11 over Noel Witney and John Banning on rink six. The Witney team jumped first with a one in the first end but a counter of three shots on the next end by the Josh team told the story of the match. Scoring on 15 of the 20 ends played, the Josh team simply refused to let the Witney team onto the card to post a comfortable win.
Paul Kennedy, Barry O’Keefe and Bob Bembrick scored a 20-14 win over Mick Simmons, Paul Stueckrat and Terry Burke on rink seven in a display of consistent shot play. The Simmons team scored first points but the Kennedy team hit straight back with a one, five, one combination that gave them a seven to one lead going into the fifth end. The Simmons team scored a four-shot win in the eighth end to trail 10-6 but the Kennedy team hit back with a two in the ninth to keep their lead edging ahead. A run of one shot wins from the 10th to the 13th end by the Simmons team got them within two shots of the lead at 12-10 going into the 14th end, but the Kennedy team kept alternating the end wins to frustrate any attempt by the Simmons team to steal their lead. A four shot win by the Kennedy team in the 18th end kicked their lead out to 18-12 and the Simmons team could not recover to go down by six shots.
Robyn Stenhouse and Margaret Hayes scored a comfortable 21-8 win over Pauline Clark and Marj Nyland, despite some early hiccups. The Stenhouse team scored first points which were immediately countered by the Clark team to stay in the match. The Stenhouse team then scored a two-shot win countered by the Clark team with a one then a two to give them the lead by the one shot. The Stenhouse team then found their rhythm scoring two’s on the next two ends to take the lead 7-4 and from here they were never headed. On the 13th end the Stenhouse team scored a five-shot win and followed that up with a one, two, three shot combination to close out the match on the 16th end with a 13 shot margin win.
2016 WDBA Champion of Club Champions Pairs
Majellan Bowling Club proudly hosted this prestigious tournament this week with teams from Molong, Country Club, Orange City and Bathurst City playing for the coveted crown of 2016 WDBA Champion of Club Champions. In the quarter finals, the Molong team of F. Miller and G. Miller defeated Orange City’s R. Knott and A. Harman 34-6, and the Country Club and Majellan teams had the bye. In the Semi-finals, B. Callaway and L. Stinson from Country Club defeated the F. Miller and G. Miller team from Molong 23-17 on rink two to put them into the Sunday final match. In the other semi-final game, the Majellan team of E. Stretton and C. Townsend defeated J. Archer and P. Gray from the Bathurst City Club 24-15 to set up a Majellan versus Country Club final.
The final tournament got underway on Sunday. Country Club collected first points countered immediately by Majellan with a one then a three to lead 4-1 going into the fifth end where they scored another two to push them out to 6-2 going into the sixth end. Not to be out done, Country Club scored one’s on the next four ends to even the card at six all at the end of the ninth end.
The Majellan pair then scored two’s on the next two ends to lead 10-6 going into the 12th end where the Country Club pair scored a one followed by a three to again balance the card at 10 all. Country Club scored a one on the 14th which was countered by the Majellan team with one’s on the next two ends to hold a one shot lead at 12-11 going into the 17th end and it was clearly still anyone’s match. Country Club then put a one, two and four shot winning run together from the 17th to the 19th ends that pushed them out to an 18-12 lead and it looked like it was all over for Majellan.
With a one shot win in the 20th end for Majellan, it was down to the last end to settle the argument with a five to even the card and an almost impossible six to win the match. Despite a very strong attempt, the Majellan team fell just short of a four-shot win to go down to Country Club by just one shot at 18-17 in a game that reflected the high standard of bowls one would expect from a District Pairs Final. Congratulations to the Country Club team, worthy winners of the 2016 WDBA Champion of Club Champions Pairs crown. Thank you to all the players.
