A minor flood warning was issued for the Macquarie River at Bathurst on Wednesday afternoon with a peak of four metres predicted early the following morning.
Water gushed onto streets and a number were closed, including the low level Gordon Edgell Bridge at Hereford Street.
Fast-moving floodwaters and debris rushed across the road, and Bathurst Regional Council closed the bridge to motorists just after 8pm on Wednesday.
A number of other streets including Vale, Lloyds, Freemantle and Ophir roads were all closed on Thursday morning due to floodwaters.
At 4.30am on Thursday the Macquarie River peaked at 3.9 metres.
Despite the minor flooding, mayor Gary Rush praised the Raglan Creek diversion channel for keeping the main entry to the city dry.
The diversion, which was completed in 2013, directs water from the creek away from the Great Western Highway, and Cr Rush said it has passed the test.
“If the Raglan Creek diversion hadn’t been constructed it is quite clear that the highway in the last couple of days would have been cut off due to flooding,” he said,
“It’s the main highway not only into Bathurst, but feeding through to the Central West.”
The State Emergency Service’s Bathurst Unit received 14 calls for help on Wednesday and remained on standby on Thursday.
