Well above average rain this winter had left the ground sodden so it did not take too much more for the floods to begin.
Queen Charlotte’s Vale Creek in Perthville was the first to burst its banks on Wednesday with water sent gushing towards homes.
Two vehicles entered floodwater around Perthville on Wednesday and had to be rescued by emergency service crews.
Early Thursday morning, the Macquarie River peaked at 3.9 metres sending water gushing onto roads and parklands.
A number of roads were closed, but residents still took the opportunity to visit a number of flood zones around the region.
Gordon Edgell Bridge at Hereford Street was a popular place for many to check out the floods, but it was also the site for many snakes who had escaped the floodwaters.
Bathurst snake catcher Peter Graham said he was called out to remove one snake on Thursday afternoon, but ended up catching eight near the bridge.
“I’ve got seven tiger snakes and a brown snake and I saw a few others head back into the water,” he said.
Mr Graham urged people not to touch or provoke snakes they may find along the city’s waterways.
